Read John 14:25-27
When a lifelong friend calls you, you immediately know who you’re talking to when you hear their voice. You’ve heard that voice for many years. But when newer people call, it takes time to recognize who they are. Christ followers will develop an ear for God’s voice. Jesus says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me†(John 10:27). Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will “teach you all things and will remind you of everything.†We don’t listen to Jesus, or the Holy Spirit, with our ears, but with our hearts.
The fact that you are a Christian is proof that God speaks to you and that you can hear Him and that you have become able to respond to Him. At some point in your life, you began to want what God wants for you. You began to trust Him and His Word to you. Nothing the Holy Spirit will say to you will contradict Scripture. In fact, the Holy Spirit in you is the very One who inspired the Scriptures. The Scriptures are how you “tune in†to hear God’s voice. God has given you a tool for getting in tune with His voice. Musicians use tuners to make sure their instruments play true. As you practice listening to the Holy Spirit, your ability to hear and discern His voice will grow. Reading and memorizing Scripture is the best way to stay true. As you listen to God’s voice in Scripture, you’ll be able to recognize His voice of direction and encouragement in your daily life—sometimes convicting you about a poor choice or confirming a good one.
How exciting that the same Spirit who inspired the Bible lives in you! Reading the Bible not only builds your faith and renews your mind—it heightens your sensitivity to God’s voice and His leading.
